MOSCOW, June 22 (Itar-Tass) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had discussed with President of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov issues related to the provision of assistance to the republic in the liquidation of the aftermath of a recent flood in the republic.
“You have been affected by flooding and its consequences were grave. How are you coping with it?” Medvedev asked Kadyrov at the meeting.
The Chechen head said that hundreds of houses were inundated in the flood. He noted that the first aid has already been provided, however the main question – restoration of bridges and roads – remains. “If we get no assistance from the federal centre we will not cope this year,” believes Kadyrov. Medvedev said to this: “I know that you are helping people.”
“As for additional support, we will discuss this with you, we will think how to help the republic in the liquidation of the aftermath of this destructive flood,” Medvedev said.
The situation in Chechnya, where heavy rains caused a landslide, is under control, Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu said earlier. He attended the ceremony marking the graduation of students from the Russian Emergencies Ministry’s Academy of Civil Defence on Saturday. The situation in the Chechen Republic is under control. The republic’s department for emergencies copes with the tasks, the minister noted.
Shoigu said that heavy rains in the republic caused a landslide. Six houses were destroyed, and seven were flooded. He also said that the system of energy supply was restored. According to him, everything works as normal. The minister noted that the situation on the whole in southern Russia was tense due to heavy rains. “Our services are in readiness and on duty at all the flood-threat areas,” Shoigu added.
The head of the Emergencies Ministry press service in Chechnya, Timur Taisumov, told Itar-Tass that about 50,000 residents in Grozny were left without electricity for almost 24 hours. The halt was caused by a transformer breakdown at an eastern substation due to heavy rains. Specialists from Nurenergo were working at the site, but it was hard to say when the electricity supply would resume, he noted.
According to reports from Chechnya, the situation in the republic on the whole was under control. According to Taisumov, water level in the Sunzha River in the settlement of Voikovo in Grozny subsided 40 centimetres and was posing no threat any longer. The gas and energy supply halted by rains was resumed in the Nozhai-Yurt district on Saturday.
